Sun’s out, pedals are down! It’s officially National Bike Month, and here in Roanoke, there is no better place to be on two wheels. From the winding paths of the Greenway to the world-class trails on Mill Mountain, our "Star City" truly earns its reputation as a cycling hub.
At WeeWheel Roanoke, our mission is simple: More People, on More Bikes, More Often. This month isn't just about the pros or the mountain bike enthusiasts—it’s about the toddlers on balance bikes, the kindergartners taking their first "tear-free" pedal strokes, and—believe it or not—the adults who are ready to finally join the fun.
Here is how you can celebrate Bike Month with your family this May!
Dive Into Local Events
Roanoke is buzzing with cycling energy this month. Whether your rider is a seasoned shredder or just starting out, there’s a spot for them:
Walk and Roll to School Day (May 6): Fire up the "bike bus!" This national day of action is all about celebrating the journey to school. Instead of the carpool line, join thousands of students across the country—and right here in Roanoke—by biking, scooting, or walking to class. It’s a great way to show kids that their bike is a real vehicle that can take them places!
Youth Mountain Bike Race: Head over to Washington Park! This is one of our favorite local events. It’s a spectator-friendly, low-pressure way for kids (ages 2–14) to experience the thrill of a "race" in a super supportive environment.
Disco MTB Series: Looking for some mid-week magic? The Disco races are back at Mill Mountain. Even if your kiddos aren’t racing yet, the atmosphere is electric and a great way to show them how fun the bike community can be.
Plot Twist: We Teach Grown-Ups, Too!
Think you missed the boat (or the bike) because you didn't learn as a kid? Think again. One of our favorite things at WeeWheel is helping adults conquer the "I never learned" hurdle. Whether you’re a parent who wants to keep up with your kids on the Greenway, or you just want a new way to enjoy the Roanoke outdoors, we have a No-Judgment Zone waiting for you.
Custom Adult Lessons: We use the same proven balance-first methods we use for the kids, adapted for adult bodies and brains.
Confidence Building: We focus on stability, braking, and steering so you can feel in control—not terrified.
Family Goals: Imagine a Saturday where the whole family—kids and parents—actually rides together instead of you chasing them on foot!
Be Part of the "1 Million" Mission
We are on a bold mission to teach 1 million people how to ride. Why? Because a bike is more than just a toy—it’s a ticket to independence, a boost in confidence, and a lifelong healthy habit.
When a rider (at any age!) masters that first independent glide without the "death grip" on the handlebars, they realize they can do hard things. That confidence travels with you far beyond the pavement.
Ready to Join the Team?
Don't let Bike Month pass you by while the bikes sit in the garage. Whether your "student" is 2 or 62, WeeWheel Roanoke has a coach and a level ready for them.
Our memberships offer flexible scheduling via our parent app, professional coaching at our local Roanoke parks, and a community of families who believe that life is better on two wheels.
Let’s make May the month your family discovers the joy of the ride.
Happy Riding, Roanoke! See you on the trails!
